Meet our people : Yi Shi of Zenus
Hello everyone! My name is Yi Shi and I am a co-founder at Zenus, an up and coming facial recognition company which operates in the events space.
I started my career as a night auditor at Homewood Suites by Hilton and then a membership assistant at the Hotel and Lodging association of Greater Houston. This is how I got in touch with events for the first time. Upon graduation from the University of Houston, Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management I co-founded Zenus where I was able to put my studies to the test and grow my skills.
I am a great believer in taking care of ones body and thus wake up at 5 am to work out at the gym. In addition to taking care of my body, I constantly focus on growing my skills and expertise. Learning never stops and a startup environment is ideal for exploring yourself and understanding how far you can push yourself.
Q. What do you love about event tech?
A. What I enjoy the most about event technology is how attendees react to it. Even though there is a perception that face recognition can be scary, we see people’s faces light up when using the service. The same applies with other technologies that improve the convenience and experience of the attendee. Event technology is the facilitator to making a lasting impression on people.
Q. How can women make an impact in the event tech space?
A. As mentioned, event technology is meant to streamline processes and offer a better user experience. Women are typically organized and empathetic. You must care for people in order to be able to anticipate their needs. Hence, women are ideal for selecting the right tools and thinking ahead about what the next best technology is going to be.
Q. What are some of your personal favorite tools/brands/products/biz?
A. Some of the tools that I enjoy using include MixMax which can help you schedule emails at the right time and share your availability with ease; Expensify and Gusto which make operations easy; Zoom for video calls (we are doing lots of them); and Drift so that we can communicate with our website visitors live.
Q. What's your one piece of advice to other women in event tech?
A. Believe in yourself and do not give up. If you do not believe in yourself, nobody else will. Trust your gut feeling and do not be afraid to take risks. This is the only way to achieve extraordinary results. Risk and extreme work ethic are vital.
